Year 10 - Fashion Design
Course Description
Using innovative and creative learning opportunities in fashion design, students use real-life situations as a context to produce skillful and well-designed garments and items. Through a range of different design briefs, students are given the opportunity to develop their practical skills further and gain the confidence required to work individually on practical outcomes. The design briefs given enable students to extend themselves depending on their ability, allowing students new to the course to succeed. There will be approximately three units in the year-long course, each including design work, related studies and practical work. Individual work on design briefs which include research, conceptual drawing and development, costing, evaluation and fabric studies.
Students will:
- Develop their practical skills to improve accuracy on the sewing machine
- Learn specific skills that incorporate specialist equipment in the classroom.
- Use problem-solving skills when challenges arise to complete a product
- Follow the design process to ensure the outcome meets the brief
- Learn planning skills to improve time management and efficiency in the classroom
- Create products that incorporate individual styles and trends
- Use templates to create outfit illustrations
Pre-requisites
There are no pre-requisites for this course.
Notice of risk - students of technology courses should be compliant with all health and safety guidelines to protect themselves and others. Students failing to do so could be removed from the course.
Course Specific Costs
$40 - consumables
Students will also be charged for fabrics and notions for each assignment.

Fashion design can lead to numerous careers in the design and fashion industry, with jobs such as buyers, textile producers, designers, fashion stylists, interior design and photographers. This course also provides useful life skills such a problem solving, critical thinking, perseverance, time management and everyday measurement calculations.
