Year 9 - Product Design
Course Description
This course teachers the foundations of technology, problem solving, perseverance, time management and everyday measurements and calculations. Students will be introduced to technological knowledge through the design process; equipping them with the skills to problem solve and meet the needs of a design brief through critical thinking, planning and manufacturing. Students will gain confidence in technological practice when working with a range of tools and machines and learn how to apply these in a practical environment.
After completing this course, students will be able to:
- Apply basic design skills to practical outcomes and gain confidence in the workshop
- Use elements of CAD/CAM (computer aided design/ computer aided manufacture)
- Experiment and use materials and processes effectively in a given situation
- Mark, measure and cut accurate and precise components by reading and understanding professional working drawings by the nature of technology
This is a half-year course and takes up 1 option line.
Pre-requisites
There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Course Specific Costs
$120 (approximately) - This covers the cost of materials/resources used in the workshop.
Pathway
This subject leads well into other areas of technology, including: Resistant Materials, Design Visual Communication and Fashion Design as well as continuing with Product Design into senrio levels. This course equips learners with the ability to problem solve, address a brief, investigate a context and develop solutions in the form of testing and trialling. These are all transferrable skills that relate to many areas of learning in life. Skills learned equip learners for a range of different pathways including Trade and University.
