Level 3 - Drama
Course Description
This course explores what it really means to perform with intent and refines the skills gained in Level 2. Students will devise their own original drama to realise a concept, perform individually and in groups, and will be involved in performing a significant play to a live audience. They will continue to expand their knowledge around a variety of theatre forms as well as discover more about New Zealand playwrights who have influenced the world of Theatre. There may also be opportunities for students to explore the skills involved in writing scripts and directing performances. We will aim to see at least one live professional theatre performance as part of exam preparation for this course. Students will also be involved in practical workshops with industry professionals where possible.
The course will focus on:
- Developing communication skills through drama practice
- Understanding and developing a working knowledge of and skills in all areas of production within a historical, social, and cultural context
- Furthering to develop skills in close analysis of text and independence in making decisions for interpretation and performance of role
- Providing further opportunities for the development of important life skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, self-discipline, problem-solving, decision making, research, and evaluation
- Fostering self-confidence and esteem through drama performance
- Extending their practical skills and craft of drama
- Engaging with drama as an expression of culture.
Drama encompasses fundamental life skills which enable students to explore their own and others' cultures, interact, support, and encourage each other through practical processes.
Scholarship in Drama
Students who enter scholarship are required to demonstrate higher critical thinking. Students will use prior knowledge, experience, and critical analysis of drama processes, texts, and theories to create and reflect on their own devising and written analysis tasks.
Pre-requisites
Students enrolling in this course are expected to have completed the Level 2 drama course, or be receiving individual speech and drama tuition. Entry at this level is at the discretion of the Head of Faculty: performing arts for all students.
Course Specific Costs
Up to $300 for live performances, workshops, and travel where applicable. The intention is to see at least one live performance related to study in this course.
Students are required to have their own performance blacks (long sleeve black top and long black pants which they are able to move in)
Pathway
This course provides a pathway for students to move toward tertiary study and careers in acting and musical theatre, screen acting, directing, as well as performing arts technologies and supporting industries. The drama pathway also provides relevant lifelong skills for students that complement any profession or career that they undertake.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
