Year 10 - English (Core)
Course Description
Learning in Year 10 English is based on the whakataukī: "E tio te tui, e ketekete te kaka, e korihi te kokako" - it takes many instruments to make a symphony. The fundamental concept students explore in this course is: "Our strength is in diversity."
Units of work are divided into literature modules, language modules, and special modules.
Possible literature modules include:
- Novel study
- Director study
- Wide reading
Possible language units include:
- Fake news
- Formal writing
- Unfamiliar text
- Mechanics, usage and grammar
Possible special modules include:
- Academic honesty
- 'Night at the Museum' monologue exhibition
All learning is based on Level 5 of the New Zealand curriculum, which encompasses two strands: listening, reading and viewing (making meaning), and speaking, writing and presenting (creating meaning).

Pathway
English leads to most tertiary courses, especially arts, journalism, management studies, law, education, or medicine. This can lead to careers in: writing, teaching, journalism, communications, human resources, or publishing. Skills are developed in researching, communicating, analysing, evaluating, comprehending and interacting.
