Course Description
Higher or Standard Level
The language B course focuses on language acquisition and development in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In this course, students further develop their ability to communicate in the target language through the study of language, themes and texts. In addition to developing language skills, language acquisition courses also foster intercultural understanding and global engagement.
There are five broad prescribed themes in this course which provide a context for language acquisition. They are:
- Identities
- Experiences
- Human ingenuity
- Social organisation
- Sharing the planet

Pre-requisites
For entry into standard level, students must be Securely at the expected level for level 6 in Year 11 or equivalent. Entry into higher level requires additional language learning outside of the New Zealand in-school programmes.

Pathway
Students can study Japanese at university as a major, or as part of an interdisciplinary programme such as international management. There are career opportunities for those with international language skills in: radio and television, travel and tourism, international sports, journalism, law, teaching, diplomatic services, trade and industry, translation and interpreting services.

Internal: 25% – Individual oralExternal: 75% – External examination (reading comprehension, listening comprehension and writing)
