Year 10 - Mathematics and Statistics (Core)

Course Description

This course aims to develop the skills from the Year 9 core mathematics course, to prepare students for Year 11 mathematics.

This course seeks to enable students to:

  • Develop a belief in the value of mathematics and its usefulness
  • Encourage a continuing and creative interest in the subject
  • Develop the skills, concepts, understanding and attitudes to deal confidently with the mathematics of everyday life
  • Develop a variety of approaches to solving problems involving mathematics, and to develop the ability to reason logically
  • Achieve the mathematical and statistical literacy needed in a society which is technologically orientated and information rich
  • Gain the mathematical tools, skills, understanding, and attitudes required in future careers
  • Provide a foundation for continuing studies where mathematical concepts are central
  • Develop mathematical talent

Topics studied include numeric reasoning, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics, and probability.

Pre-requisites

Based on the Year 9 common assessments, students are placed in an appropriate mathematics class.

A graphics calculator is recommended

Pathway

Further study and careers in mathematics are in many sectors, such as commerce, science, engineering, medicine, architecture, government departments, information management, quality improvement, and insurance. Most industries regularly require data analysis and research.

Assessment Information

Each topic taught is assessed through an examination, tests and/or assignments.
