Year 11 - Chinese
Course Description
This course builds on the skills acquired over Years 9 and 10. Students widen their vocabulary and extend their understanding of structures in a systematic way. The essential aim is to increase students’ competence in reading, writing, speaking and listening to Chinese and to build their confidence in using the language to communicate in everyday situations.
Course overview
Year 11 Chinese is made up of Levels 5 and 6 of the New Zealand curriculum. The topics covered include:
• Shopping
• My hometown
• School life
• Trip to the doctors
• Describing/planning a trip
Pre-requisites
Students should have completed the Year 9 and Year 10 courses, or their equivalent.
Course Specific Costs
$30 - workbook
$10 - (approximately) cultural activities
Pathway
Students can study Chinese at university as a major, or as part of an interdisciplinary programme such as international management. There are career opportunities for those with international language skills in: radio and television, travel and tourism, international sports, journalism, law, teaching, diplomatic services, trade and industry, translation and interpreting services.
