Level 2 - Art Photography
Course Description
This course will introduce students to a range of creative learning opportunities in photography. The areas explored during the course include the history of photography, exploration of analogue and digital image production processes, introduction to basic DSLR skills, introductory Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop skills, studio lighting techniques and procedures in producing quality inkjet prints for exhibition and presentation.
This course also provides students with the opportunity to explore the photographic image from a philosophical and conceptual perspective. This is enabled through periods of research into the work of photographers and by asking questions such as:
- What has the photographer intended to communicate through this image?
- What contexts influenced the making of this image?
- How have the techniques used in the image influenced the viewers’ interpretation?
By asking these questions, students will develop their critical and conceptual thinking skills. This also develops their understanding of subject specific vocabulary, both in written and verbal communication.

Pathway
The world is increasingly influenced by our interaction with the photographic image and our understanding and interpretation of what it is communicating to us as the viewer. Career pathways in the realm of visual art continue to grow through the advertising industry, fashion industry, journalism, filmmaking, animation, website design, television and social media. Tertiary study links to these and other creative industries and is a pathway that becomes available to students of this subject.
The skills developed through the exploration and understanding of photographic techniques, and the critical thinking that is encouraged, makes for valuable contributions to how we become visually literate, willing to be open to ideas and to creatively problem solve in any professional context.
This also contributes to an inquisitive individual, whose pathway through tertiary education is enhanced beyond the specifics of their study, by being aware of the part creativity can play in making a contribution to their community and the wider global community.
In a wider context, all art subjects enhance fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, lateral thinking, complex analysis, and critical thinking skills. The ability to work collaboratively, and demonstrate creativity, connectivity and communication are highly desired transferable skills enhancing many chosen careers.
