Level 3 - Mathematics - Statistics and Probability
Course Description
This course enhances the understanding of statistics with supporting material in computational mathematics and modelling idea. The emphasis is on practical and numerical work and should be the preferred course for students in support of courses in biology, social sciences, commerce and as preparation for various trade and professional courses.
This course seeks to enable students to:
- Further develop their understanding of the statistical enquiry cycle
- Plan investigations in forming and answering statistical questions
- Analyse data, communicating evidence from displays to reach a statistical conclusion
- Enhance the statistical tools, skills, understanding, and attitudes required in future careers
- Develop a variety of approaches to solving problems involving probability
Pre-requisites
Entry is at the discretion of the Head of Faculty. Students choosing this course will be expected to have gained a minimum of 14 mathematics and statistics credits at NCEA Level 2, including Merit grades preferred in the following achievement standards:
- 91264: Use statistical methods to make an inference
- 91267: Apply probability in solving problems

Pathway
Further study and careers in statistics are in many sectors, such as commerce, science, medicine, government departments, information management, quality improvement, and insurance. Most industries also regularly require data analysis and research.
