Level 3 - Outdoor Education
Course Description
This course is designed to teach and test the skills and challenges of life. Theoretical and practical applications are used to develop the students’ outdoor skills, risk management and safety principles.
There are four main experiences:
- Risk management within open water scuba diving - students will gain their open water dive certificate
- Leadership through overnight tramping
- Surfing or rock climbing personal performance improvement program
- Optional advanced scuba course and day skipper course
Pre-requisites
NCEA Level 2 outdoor education.
Discussion with the Head of Faculty will take place for students who did not take Level 2 outdoor education.
Course Specific Costs
$1,500- day trips and camps
Option to gain advanced dive certification — this will occur an additional cost of approximately $1000 and a 3-day camp.
Pathway
The students, having completed this course, will have experienced risk, varying environments, appreciation of others, leadership. Outdoor Education produces a person who is self-confident, self-reliant and thus better prepared for all circumstances, and possible further study in this area.
Assessment Information
This course offers credits through a combination of Achievement Standards and Unit Standards. Achievement Standards are drawn from the physical education curriculum which count towards University Entrance and course endorsement.AS91501 - this standard is also offered in physical education studies. A student can do both of these courses but can only gain credit in one for the repeated standard.
