IB Geography

Course Description

Higher or Standard Level

Geography is a beneficial choice for students considering careers in, for example, the environmental and resource legal sphere, health science, tourism industries, the technology industry, social informatics, urban planning or international engagement. Geography helps students understand the interconnectedness of environments, economies and societies in the contemporary world, and engage with similarity and diversity in human development.

Topics such as population studies, climate change, oceans and coastal margins and the geography of food are studied. 

Field Trips (Whiritoa Beach and Rotorua)

The aims of the IB geography course are to enable students to:

  • Develop an understanding of the dynamic interrelationships between people, places, spaces and the environment at different scales
  • Develop a critical awareness and consider complexity thinking in the context of the nexus of geographic issues, including:
    • acquiring an in-depth understanding of how geographic issues, have been shaped by powerful human and physical processes
    • synthesizing diverse geographic knowledge in order to form viewpoints about how these issues could be resolved
  • Understand and evaluate the need for planning and sustainable development through the management of resources at varying scales

The fieldwork involves two one-day trips to Whiritoa beach to collect data to investigate the seasonal variation in the geomorphology of Whiritoa beach and its surrounds. One trip will occur in the winter of the first year, the second trip will occur in the summer of the final year compare, contrast and analyse findings. There is also a day trip to Rotorua looking at tourism patterns with a focus on adventure tourism. Students partake in activities at Velocity Valley and the Skyline Gondola.
