Level 3 - Fashion Design
Course Description
This course explores the specific techniques related to pattern making, applied design and construction. Students will learn how to draft a pattern block from measurement, add special features and fit the body. They will also look into applied design through fabric manipulation in order to enhance the look of an outfit. Students have the opportunity to enter the Hokonui Fashion Awards.
Students will:
- Use the design process to produce functional outcomes
- Create original garments from measurements and pattern making
- Work independently on the interpretation of a given design brief
- Apply technological practice to different situations
- Develop complex practical sewing skills
- Learn complex procedures to enhance the technical design of a garment
- Create a report that compares competing and contesting factors when developing a garment
- Be able to discuss how modelling enables informed decision making
- Use technological modelling to develop a design idea
- Use critical feedback from community stakeholders to develop an idea
- Have the opportunity to use complex fabrics and fibres
- Use mathematical equations to transform flat pattern drafting into 3D form
- Use applied design techniques to enhance fabric
Pre-requisites
To have completed year 11 fashion and design. Entry at discretion of Head of Faculty: technology for students new to technology.
Notice of risk - students of technology courses should be compliant with all health and safety guidelines to protect themselves and others. Students failing to do so could be removed from the course.
Course Specific Costs
$50 (approximately) - consumables
Students will also be charged for fabrics and notions for each assignment.
Pathway
Fashion design can lead to numerous careers in the design and fashion industry, with jobs such as buyers, textile producers, designers, fashion stylists, interior design and photographers. This course also provides useful life skills such a problem solving, critical thinking, perseverance, time management and everyday measurement calculations.
Assessment Information
Note: Sometimes the same standards are offered in more than one technology course. A student can do more than one of these courses but can only gain credit in one course for a repeated standard. Please discuss with the teacher in charge if you are doing two technology courses.Credit Information
