Year 9 - English (Core)

Course Description

Learning in Year 9 English is based on the whakataukī: "Piki atu ki te taumata o tōku maunga, ka kite au i te mana, i te ihi o te whenua nei nō ōku tūpuna" - I climb to see the summit of my mountain to see the land of my ancestors. The fundamental question students seek to answer in this course is: "Who am I?".

Units of work are divided into literature modules and language modules. 

Possible literature modules include:

  • Short written text study
  • Short visual text study
  • Poetry study
  • Wide reading

Possible language units include:

  • TED talks
  • Creative writing
  • Mechanics, usage and grammar

All learning is connected to Level 4 of the New Zealand Curriculum, which encompasses two strands: listening, reading and viewing (making meaning), and speaking, writing and presenting (creating meaning). 

This is a full-year course and takes up 2 option lines.

Pathway

English leads to most tertiary courses, especially arts, journalism, management studies, law, education, or medicine. This can lead to careers in: writing, teaching, journalism, communications, human resources, or publishing. Skills are developed in researching, communicating, analysing, evaluating, comprehending and interacting.

Assessment Information

Students will complete approximately one common assessment task per term.
