Level 2 - Resistant Materials

Course Description

This is an exciting hands-on course, designed to equip students with a wider scope of manufacturing methods and implement advanced skills needed when working with timber, metals and some plastics. Application and compliance with industrial unit standards, a high work ethic and clear expectations are required for further vocational education and training.

This programme is a practical and multi-disciplinary programme for students, providing them with the skills and knowledge to springboard into any career in the construction industry and beyond. Students will be using a mixture of materials such as but not limited to: wood, plastic, metal, adhesives, screws and bolts.

Likely projects for 2025 are a cape cod chair and geometric shelving. Individual or group projects to meet a brief and other projects may be added. The projects align with unit standards that will be delivered throughout the course totaling 16 credits. Like in industry, at times a working drawing will be provided and students will be expected to skillfully manufacture the given product to set tolerances, including during a production line setting.

Students are expected to comply with all health and safety regulations and present their work to the best possible level of craftsmanship.

Pre-requisites

Students that have studied a technology course at Year 11 will already understand the design process, but we welcome those willing to try their best.

Notice of risk - students of technology courses should be compliant with all health and safety guidelines to protect themselves and others. Students failing to do so could be removed from the course.

Course Specific Costs

$200 (approximately) - Students may keep the products they create. The cost of each product will be on-charged including PPE and consumables used in the workshops, like welding and testing materials. Additional costs will seek parental permission.

Pathway

Students who participate in this programme can consider apprenticeships in a variety of building and construction industries, such as: carpentry, brick and block laying, painting and decorating, flooring, joinery, frame and truss, aluminum joinery, concrete, glass and glazing, and so on.

The programme also sets a great foundation of practical knowledge that relates to careers such as engineering, surveying, architecture, materials processing etc.
Rather than focusing on any one trade, the students build skills and an understanding of all trades in the construction industry. They also develop literacy, numeracy and communication skills and contribute to NCEA qualifications.

Assessment Information

As well as hands-on experience, throughout the course students will be required to complete unit standard written self reflections and keep a log book to evidence their understanding. Some assessments may include a demonstration to the assessor of how to complete a given task, safely, accurately and to comply with the given working drawing, including tolerances.
