Year 11 - Business Studies
Course Description
Business studies intends to help build an enterprising culture in New Zealand through a focus on knowledge of business theory and on applying that knowledge in a range of business contexts. This course achieves this aim by putting students through a group enterprise activity, where they plan, design and run a business in a school context. By the end of this course, students will have acquired a solid foundation in business management principles, developed innovative thinking and problem-solving skills, honed effective communication and interpersonal skills, enhanced critical thinking and decision-making abilities, fostered teamwork and collaboration skills, embraced a culture of lifelong learning, and cultivated ethical and socially responsible business practices.
Students will develop skills that allow them to:
- Apply knowledge and critical understanding to current business issues and problems
- Distinguish facts from opinions and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data to support an argument and appreciate the different perspectives
- Understand major groups and organisations within and outside business and how the main types of businesses are organised, financed and operated
- Recognise relationships between organisations, employees, government, owners and society
- Be aware of the nature and significance of innovation and change within business activities

There are no pre-requisites for this course.
Course Specific Costs
$20 to $30 - start up capital for their business activity
$40 - course cost including a learning workbook
Pathway
Business studies continues into NCEA Level 2 and Level 3 or the IB Diploma, further study can be undertaken at university level (such as degrees in finance, economics, business management and marketing). Career opportunities are wide and varied. business management skills and knowledge are directly relevant in career areas such as private business, banking, accountancy, journalism, local and national government bodies. Business studies will enable students to have a taste of the demands of being a young entrepreneur. The skills and knowledge they learn in Year 11 business studies will be directly transferable to the real world.
