Year 9 - Agriculture and Horticulture

Course Description

This course gives students the opportunity to gain an insight into the food and fiber industries within New Zealand. This course builds a foundation for further studies in agricultural and horticultural science and agribusiness in future years. 

Students will be actively involved in learning a variety of agriculture and horticulture concepts during this course. The school's agriculture and horticultural farm facilities (Owl Farm, vineyard, beehives, lavender rows, pine tree plantation and vegetable gardens) will be used extensively to support students' learning. 

Examples of units covered in this course include: 

  • Growing plants from seeds
  • Principles of beekeeping
  • Understanding the importance of primary industries to the New Zealand economy 
  • Livestock management

This is a half-year course and takes up 1 option line.

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Pathway

This course leads onto NCEA agricultural and horticultural science subjects and is strongly recommended for students considering a career in the Food and Fibre industries and/or students undertaking further studies at polytechnic/farming institutions or university. This course will also complement those studying commerce courses and geography, as well as those who will pursue a career in the primary industries.
