Level 2 - Accounting
Course Description
This course enables students to develop an extended knowledge of the essential concepts of accounting, its purpose, its function and understanding of business organisations, and the accounting processes and systems they use. Building on Year 11 accounting, new systems are examined, including securing cash handling, receipts and payments, accounts receivable and inventory. Students will continue to work through processes that produce a set of financial statements that allow for informed financial advice and business decision-making. This course includes understanding XERO, an accounting software program. Understanding these processes are a critical guide to the proper functioning of business and set the student up for the transition into Level 3 accounting or tertiary study.
The objectives of this course are for students to develop a range of written and analytical skills and tools to make real life financial decisions in a constantly changing and uncertain world. The course covers the six strands of accounting – conceptual, processing, systems, reporting, interpretation and decision making. Accounting enhances financial capability by giving students the following:
Gaining knowledge, skills and experience to manage the financial affairs of individuals, whānau and local or regional small or medium entities including community organisations that operate accounting sub-systems, while acting with integrity.
Gaining knowledge, skills and experience to make use of appropriate communication tools and skills to process, report and interpret information for individuals, whānau and local or regional small or medium entities including community organisations that operate accounting sub-systems, while acting with integrity.
Students who have successfully completed this course will have a sound understanding of the full accounting process and control systems put in place by businesses. Students will have experienced skills in using current accounting software.

Year 11 business and financial management or Year 11 commerce.

Pathway
Accounting continues into NCEA Level 3. It is also strongly recommended that if a student is interested in tertiary studies in the area of business that they take accounting at this level. Career opportunities in the accounting profession are numerous, for example in chartered and commercial accounting. Accounting skills learned in this course are very useful to students to understand day-to-day financial transactions that affect them or those who at some stage will enter into business themselves.

The course will consist of two external achievement standards of nine credits plus up to two internal achievement standards.Credit Information
