IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Course Description

Standard Level Only

This course recognises the increasing role that mathematics and technology play in a diverse range of fields in a data-rich world. As such, it emphasises the meaning of mathematics in context by focusing on topics that are often used as applications or in mathematical modelling. To give this understanding a firm base, this course also includes topics that are traditionally part of a pre-university mathematics course such as calculus and statistics.

The course makes extensive use of technology to allow students to explore and construct mathematical models. Mathematics: applications and interpretation will develop mathematical thinking, often in the context of a practical problem and using technology to justify conjectures.

Students who choose this subject should enjoy seeing mathematics used in real-world contexts and to solve real-world problems.

Pre-requisites

Entry is at the discretion of the Head of Faculty and the IB Coordinator. A particular strength in algebraic skills is required. Students choosing this course will be expected to have a competent performance across the mathematics curriculum strands, including a minimum of Securely at the expected level grades (Standard Level) or Comprehensively at the expected level grades (Higher level) for both linear algebra and non-linear algebra in the 11MAT/11MAX courses.

Pathway

Mathematics may be studied for a degree in its own right, or as a supporting course for other degree programmes. Further study and careers in mathematics are in many sectors, such as commerce, science, engineering, medicine, architecture, government departments, information management, quality improvement, and insurance. Most industries also regularly require data analysis and research.

Assessment Information

Internal: 20% – Mathematical exploration
External: 80% – Written examination
