Year 11 - English
Course Description
Learning in Year 11 English is based on the whakataukī: "Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu" - adorn the bird with feathers so it may soar. The fundamental aim of this course is to prepare students for English studies in either Level 2 NCEA or for the IB Diploma.
In this course, students will:
- Study both written and visual texts
- Consider the audience, purpose and messages within texts
- Explore how authors use language to create meaning in texts
- Develop arguments in response to studied texts
- Hone writing skills in terms of mechanics, use of vocabulary and structure
- Produce original fiction and non-fiction pieces of writing
- Practice oral language skills
Pre-requisites
A competent performance across the English curriculum strands at Year 10, including passing the literacy reading corequisite assessment.

Pathway
English leads to most tertiary courses, especially arts, journalism, management studies, law, education, or medicine. This can lead to careers in: writing, teaching, journalism, communications, human resources, or publishing. Skills are developed in researching, communicating, analysing, evaluating, comprehending and interacting.
Assessment Information
