Level 3 - Resistant Materials
Course Description
This course focuses on a selection of the foundation skills that are required for the Level 3 Building Construction and Allied Trades Skills Certificate (BCATS). The unit standards gained may be used as the first stage of an apprenticeship or as the basis for pre-trade courses.
Students will need to assess the plan/working drawings and job specifications to calculate a cutting list and determine the scope of work including processes, mathematical calculations, and material quantities (also hardware and fastenings). Students will need to keep a journal for documenting all this evidence (calculations, sketching details, written reflections and photos of the process of making) throughout the Stage 3 project. This course consists of theory and practical learning.
BCITO the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) who manage the qualifications are currently reviewing their unit standards as part of a wider national review so the standards listed may change but the course content will be very similar.
Pre-requisites
To have completed Level 2 NCEA in product design: wood, metal or DVC . Students are required to be resilient through the course as they learn and develop new skills in multiple ways following the design cycle, identifying their strengths and using them when working within a brief. Entry at discretion of Head of Faculty: technology for students new to technology
Notice of risk - students of technology courses should be compliant with all health and safety guidelines to protect themselves and others. Students failing to do so could be removed from the course.
Course Specific Costs
$120 (minimum) - This is for the cost of materials/resources/consumables used in the workshop, charged out individually as used. This cost is dependent on student-driven outcomes.
Material costs are parental approved before the manufacturing begins. Students can take their products home at the end of the course.
Pathway
Students who participate in the Level 3 Resistant materials programme can go on to consider a range of roles in the construction industry, which may include apprenticeships in a variety of trades such as carpentry, brick and block laying, painting and decorating, flooring, joinery, plumbing and gas fitting, frame and truss, and aluminium joinery. The programme also provides a good base for students who would like to enter other related areas of the construction industry such as building, quantity surveying and estimating.
