IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches
Course Description
Higher Level or Standard Level
This course includes topics that are both traditionally part of a pre-university mathematics course (for example, functions, trigonometry, calculus) as well as topics that are amenable to investigation, conjecture and proof, for instance, the study of sequences and series at both higher level (HL) and standard level (SL), and proof by induction at HL.
Students who choose this subject at SL or HL should be comfortable in the manipulation of algebraic expressions and enjoy the recognition of patterns and understand the mathematical generalisation of these patterns.
Students who wish to take mathematics: analysis and approaches at HL will have strong algebraic skills and the ability to understand simple proofs. The speed of learning in HL is rapid, where students are required to draw from different mathematical concepts to solve complex problems using logical thought. They will be mathematical purist students who get pleasure and satisfaction from solving challenging problems and who are diligent, organised and resilient.

Pre-requisites
Entry is at the discretion of the Head of Faculty and the IB Coordinator. A particular strength in algebraic skills is required. Students choosing this course will be expected to have a competent performance across the mathematics curriculum strands, including a minimum of Securely at the expected level grades (Standard Level) or Comprehensively at the expected level grades (Higher level) for both linear algebra and non-linear algebra in the 11MAT/11MAX courses.

Pathway
Mathematics may be studied for a degree in its own right, in combination with another major course, or as a supporting course for other degree programmes such as medicine, architecture, or economics. Its role in physics, chemistry, and engineering is well established, but it is also important in the biological and social sciences as well as in business management and computer science.

Internal: 20% – Mathematical explorationExternal: 80% – Written examination
